May 10, 2023 12:43:51 PM

When choosing outdoor lighting for your Memphis home, you want to feel confident that your lighting design will stand the test of time for years to come. If you are hiring a professional company, you probably just assume that everything they’re using is the highest quality.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case at all.

In this article, we’ll talk about the various types of outdoor lighting materials and which ones are best. Even if you’re working with a professional, you should know how to choose outdoor lighting fixtures so that you can make sure you’re getting the best of what’s on the market.

The last thing that you want is to have landscape lighting installed only to find out it’s failing because your company used something cheap.

What is the Best Material for Outdoor Lights?

While a lot of big box stores and hardware stores sell cheap outdoor lighting fixtures made from materials like plastic or aluminum, you want to make sure that you’re getting high-quality brass or copper. Unfortunately, even some landscape lighting companies will install cheaper lighting fixtures.

But at Mid South Night Lights, we only use brass and copper outdoor lighting fixtures.

There are some very good reasons why brass and copper are superior, which we’ll dive into next.

Is Brass Good for Outdoors?

One of the key reasons why we only work with brass and copper is that they are long-lasting choices that can handle the elements. Both brass and copper are reliable outdoor metals that are known to be resistant to corrosion and strong. They can also stand up to various weather conditions.

This is all critically important when you’re investing in outdoor lighting.

Plastic, on the other hand, can easily break and crack. Plastic has also not been proven to stand up to the weather like brass or copper can.

Even so, outdoor plastic lighting is sold at big box stores because it’s cheap and therefore an easy sell. But it’s not just cheap from a money perspective…it’s cheap from a quality perspective, too. It’s simply not worth investing in something that’s not going to last you very long.

Powder-coated aluminum does actually look more professional at first and it will definitely hold up better than plastic. However, the powder coating is going to chip over time. You have probably seen this yourself if you have any powder-coated aluminum furniture. Variations in temperature (such as the extreme heat…or even cold…that we sometimes get) and rain can really have an impact on that coating over time.

That means the exterior finish of your light fixture is going to look inconsistent and unattractive as it becomes flaky and chipped. Despite this, some outdoor lighting professionals still install powder-coated aluminum.

Getting the Best Outdoor Lighting Material

If you care about getting the best outdoor lighting material, it’s important to work with a lighting company that won’t skimp on its products. Unfortunately, some companies do work with subpar materials. This might be a reason why they can charge less than the competition.

But like most things in life, you get what you pay for!

Paying a little bit more money for a higher-quality lighting material is a long-term investment in your system. Brass and copper light fixtures won’t fade, chip, crack, or break like cheaper materials.

Since your lights are subject to being bumped and banged by various elements (such as the mower, your child playing catch or kicking a soccer ball, or even just foot traffic), you want the strongest material possible.

While that’s not to say a light will never break, you want something strong that won’t break easily! Brass and copper are definitely your best choices.

After all, outdoor lighting is a significant investment. If you care about getting the most possible value out of it, it’s simply not worth cutting corners.
