Outdoor Security Lighting: An Overlooked Safety Measure

May 17, 2023 2:44:31 PM

When you think about making your home more safe and secure, you probably think about things like a fence or gate, security cameras, locks, and a security system. But did you know that outdoor security lighting can also be a highly effective solution to making your home more secure?

Homeowners sometimes overlook security lights as a tool for keeping intruders, thieves, and vandals away.

But lighting can be an excellent deterrent

While there’s no question that outdoor lighting can have aesthetic appeal, it also has the added benefit of making your Memphis home safer. Here are a few things to consider if you’re thinking about security lighting on your house.

How Security Lights Make Your Home Safer

There are a few key ways that security lights will help make your home safer.

For one, when a home is well-lit, it makes it appear as though someone might be home (even when they’re not). We can incorporate lighting that is controlled by an app so that you can change your lights (turning them on or off…or changing the dimming), even when you’re not at home. Or, you might just want your lights to be programmed to come on at a certain time each day.

Either way, a well-lit home definitely has the appearance of an “occupied” home, even when you aren’t there.

Security lights also make it more difficult for unwanted visitors to sneak onto your property in the first place. Most thieves, vandals, and trespassers are going to want to stay in the dark where they can’t be seen. But outdoor security lighting removes the shadows in which they’d hide. This makes it much more likely that they’ll be spotted by one of your neighbors or a passerby.

Even if you live in a secluded area (where you might not have a lot of neighbors around), security lights can make a difference because they’ll make unwanted visitors visible on your security cameras. In this way, security cameras and security lights can work together to be an effective solution.

Finally, you can also use lighting to make it highly visible to potential thieves, vandals, and trespassers that you do have cameras or a security system (you can light up a sign) which might further deter them from even attempting to step on your property.

Homeowners sometimes also use gate lighting to make it highly visible that their property won’t be easy to break into.

A security porch light might also make it visible that the front door is closed. Plus, if you have a doorbell camera, those unwanted visitors would see that they’d be on full display on your front porch if they decided to try the door.

Getting the Most Out of Security Lighting on House

Of course, the most effective security lights are going to be those that are thoughtfully installed. Lights that aren’t pointing where you want them to be or aren’t bright enough might fall short of being an effective solution.

While security lighting might be one of your primary goals for front yard lighting, that doesn’t mean you don’t want it to also be aesthetically pleasing.

There can sometimes be a fine line between lights that are serving a security purpose and those that are boosting curb appeal. You’d like for your lights to be able to do both. This will take an eye for design and thoughtful placement.

A lot of it boils down to using a lighting professional who has significant experience and expertise in lighting design. Too often, a couple of flood lights get plunked on a property and called “security lights,” even though they’re doing very little for the aesthetic appeal of the home.

Keep in mind that severe, high voltage can create a disturbance for yourself or your neighbors and even detract from the value of your home.
