Just like outdoor furniture, there can obviously be some variation in how resistant lighting is to weather. This is one of the reasons why it’s really beneficial to work with an outdoor lighting professional who is only installing the highest quality materials.

People often want to know, is LED weather resistant?
If sealed in glass within high-quality fixtures, then your lighting should be able to withstand a variety of harsh weather conditions. That includes the intense temperature variations that we sometimes experience here in Memphis, TN.
It also means crazy rainstorms that deliver a lot of water.
While we don’t see a ton of flooding here, the all-weather outdoor lighting materials that we use have been installed in designs in Florida and other places that see flooding, and it has proven to hold up in many tough conditions. That means that you don’t have to worry about it holding up at your Memphis home.
While no lighting can claim to be 100-percent resistant to weather, this is probably as close as you’ll get. A storm is more likely to damage your lighting if a limb falls on it than for it to succumb to temperatures or water.

While the local hardware store and even some lighting companies install powder-coated aluminum (or sometimes even plastic!), these materials simply cannot stand up to weather. Plastic cracks easily and simply isn’t a great material to protect your precious landscape lighting.
In addition, over time, powder-coated aluminum will chip away. You might have even noticed this yourself if you have any powder-coated aluminum furniture. But brass and copper are going to stand strong even in the face of crazy weather.
This largely boils down to making a wise decision in outdoor lighting companies. While we wish we could tell you that all companies are using high-quality lighting and lighting materials, that’s simply not the case. Sometimes, supposed “pros” are installing the same cheap materials you could buy yourself at a big box store.
These subpar outdoor lighting materials are likely not going to be able to produce a weather resistant outdoor lighting design. Your powder coated aluminum lights will likely start to chip away and look ugly in a couple of years. And any plastic lighting will easily break.
This is why it’s worthwhile to invest a little bit more money on the front end, and work with a highly professional company committed to only installing the best.
