Repair vs Replace: What the Best Option Is For Your Outdoor Lighting

Mar 27, 2023 10:05:44 AM

Landscape lighting is one of the best additions you could consider for your Memphis home. It not only adds aesthetic appeal but it can help you get more functional value out of your property.

Of course, if you already have an existing landscape lighting system…but don’t feel you’re getting the total value…you might wonder if it’s better to repair or replace landscape lighting.

In this article, we’ll talk about what might make the most sense for your Memphis home.

Should You Repair or Replace Outdoor Lighting?

There are a lot of reasons why it might make the most sense to move forward with landscape lighting replacement rather than try to repair an older system.

For one, today’s landscape lighting technology has come incredibly far. If you have an older system, there are a lot of options that weren’t even available as recently as five or 10 years ago.

Today, the best landscape lighting professionals are installing LED lighting, which is far superior to incandescent lighting, which older systems used.

While LED has significant benefits like energy efficiency, versatility, and money savings, some “pros” are still installing older incandescent systems because it’s what they’ve always done.

However, if you have an older incandescent system that is starting to fail, rather than making repairs, this would be a great time to consider a landscape lighting upgrade to an LED system.

There are also new possibilities that were not available when an older system was installed. This includes WiFi control (meaning you can have your lights controlled by an app on your smart device) and color-changing systems.

When homeowners decide to replace landscape lighting, they are often pleasantly surprised at how many options they now have available.

Get Out of the Endless Repair Cycle

Another reason to consider replacing landscape lighting is if you feel like you’re constantly fixing something with an old system. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for older systems to require frequent repairs. The quality of older fixtures and bulbs was simply subpar to what’s available today.

Along with that, old, incandescent bulbs have a much shorter lifespan than LED.

Today’s LED lights will last over 10 years, which means you don’t need to constantly be changing bulbs. This is what leads to more versatility. Because old lighting technology required frequent replacement, we had to think about where lights could go so that they could be easily accessed.

But with LED technology, we can put lighting where it works best in the design (not simply where it’s accessible).

That’s not to say that newer systems will never need maintenance. Being outside, lighting systems are subject to the elements and to various hazards (like mowers and landscaping equipment)...so repairs are sometimes needed.

But the frequency of repairs and maintenance is far less with a new system.

That’s why a lot of homeowners would rather just move forward with landscape replacement lights than continually fix an older system. A lot of homeowners with older systems do feel that they are stuck in an endless cycle of repairs.

When It’s Time to Replace Landscape Lighting

We know that deciding between repairing and replacing landscape lighting is a big decision. Even though it ultimately comes with cost savings (and fewer hassles and headaches), upgrading to a new system is still a significant investment.

We wrote an entire article about when it might be time to consider an upgrade. For instance, if you find yourself constantly fixing something or spending a lot of money on repairs, it might finally be time to replace that system.

Another time when people get serious about it being time to replace landscape lighting is when they’ve had new landscaping or hardscape work done. Perhaps you didn’t have much of a backyard or front yard before, so a simple, older system was enough for your landscape lighting needs. But now maybe you’ve added a patio or installed some new landscaping. This is a great time to take the leap and update your lighting, too.

If you’ve decided it’s time, it will be important to hire the right landscape lighting professional for the job.

You want to make sure that you choose a lighting professional that is using the latest technology so that you are truly getting an upgrade. As we mentioned, even some pros are still installing outdated landscape light fixtures. The field has rapidly evolved and you want to make sure you’re choosing a company that is keeping up!
